About Ronin

TVS Ronin is a cruiser bike available at a starting price of Rs. 1,49,001 in India. It is available in 3 variants and 6 colours with top variant price starting from Rs. 1,68,751. The TVS Ronin is powered by 225.9cc BS6 engine which develops a power of 20.1 bhp and a torque of 19.93 Nm. With both front and rear disc brakes, TVS Ronin comes up with anti-locking braking system. This Ronin bike weighs 159 kg and has a fuel tank capacity of 14 liters.

The new Ronin 225 is TVS Motor Company’s first ever neo-retro scrambler-style motorcycle. It is offered in three variants and they are differentiated by their colour schemes.

Buyers can opt between single-tone, dual-tone, and triple-tone versions. The single-tone variant is offered in Magma Red and Lightning Black colours. The dual-tone versions feature Delta Blue and Stargaze Black paint options. Lastly, the Triple tone variant is available in two colour schemes – Galactic Grey and Dawn Orange.

The feature list on TVS Ronin includes full-LED lighting, an asymmetrically-mounted LCD instrument cluster with TVS SmartXonnect Bluetooth module, two ABS modes – Rain and Road, slipper clutch, and the Glide Through Technology. Meanwhile, the styling cues comprise a round headlight, a curvy fuel tank, a single-piece seat, an engine cowl, alloy wheels, and a side-slung exhaust.

The mechanical specifications include a 225cc single-cylinder, the oil-cooled motor that makes 20.1bhp at 7,750rpm and 19.93Nm of peak torque at 3,750rpm. The engine is linked to a five-speed gearbox. The hardware comprises upside-down front forks, a seven-step preload-adjustable monoshock, a 300mm disc at the front, and a 240mm rotor at the back.

The Ronin 225 rivals the likes of the Honda CB350 RS in the Indian market.

TVS Ronin Expert Opinion

  • Good Things

    • Styling is quite aspirational
    • Gets cool looking instrument cluster
    • Tractable engine
  • Could be Better

    • Certain variants misses out on dual-channel ABS
    • Only top model gets Bluetooth

BikeWale's Take

The Ronin is a new modern retro motorcycle from TVS. This motorcycle is a bit inspired from the Zeppelin cruiser concept but has been altered to make it more relevant to the current taste. The combination of retro styling, modern tech and 225c engine makes it quite enticing. However, this motorcycle won’t be liked by riders who love to ride fast and aggressive.

TVS Ronin Review

TVS Ronin Custom Flat Tracker: First Ride Review

Introduction

TVS Ronin Front View

TVS loves to experiment with some of its expensive motorcycle and scooter brands. It did a few cool things with the Apache, and then decided to explore the world of superheroes with the Ntorq by launching some excellent paint schemes for it. Such strategies help the brand stay connected with its younger customer base and make it look aspirational.

The Hosur-based company has decided to continue this trend with the Ronin 225. At the MotoSoul 2023, the company unveiled a custom motorcycle designed and developed to participate in flat tracking – making it the second Indian company to do so, with Royal Enfield being the first.

TVS Ronin Front View

TVS is calling its flat-track sport – Drift R Cup and is planning to use this custom Ronin for multiple events planned by the company. At the MotoSoul 2023, the company handed us the Ronin flat tracker, and we decided to have some fun.

The Design and Modifications

TVS Ronin Right Side View

From a city bike to a flat tracker, this custom Ronin has undoubtedly managed to turn heads. TVS has achieved this feat by removing many cycle parts and installing some to make the motorcycle dirt ready. Firstly, many big components like the headlight, instrument cluster, stock seat setup, and exhaust have been removed. Even the side panels have been removed, and lighter ones have been installed.

TVS Ronin Bike Seat

Then, a few components were installed to make it track-ready. The front suspension is new and gets long travel; a broader handlebar and a flatter and a more extended single seat have been incorporated. This Ronin gets a race exhaust that is extremely loud and does the job of keeping spectators entertained. There’s also a broader and more extended bash plate, in case the bike needs to go through some stones. The tyres are from Timsun and are off-road focused. But the essential modification on the bike – the front disc brake – has been removed.

The Ride

TVS Ronin Front View

The goal was to ride around the 200 metres flat-track with style, hoping to avoid tasting the dirt. But things don’t always go as planned. The first few laps were consumed in getting used to the overall ergonomics of this custom Ronin. Then, that large cushionless seat made things a bit difficult, but eventually, I got used to that setting. Now, with the custom Ronin, I was in no mood to do a few laps. I wanted more, got more, and put up a good show, all thanks to that agile and light feeling that Ronin churned out.

TVS Ronin Engine From Left

Ronin’s 225cc motor always had the low-end grunt to keep things fun and active in the city limits. On the flat track, the same performance helped me get out of the corner with some amateur slides. While my left leg was busy acting as the last balance point of the tripod, my wrist made sure to gas out the moment I found the right line of the track.

TVS Ronin Front View

The custom Ronin was running shorter ratios in the first gear, due to which shifting to second gear was inevitable. But that’s where the fun lies because even on such a fast track, it allowed me to begin my slide by downshifting, just a few metres before my turn-in point. Here, the transition is super smooth – some credit also goes to the chassis and the Timsun tyres which allowed some comfortable slides.

TVS Ronin Right Side View

I had a few falls due to target fixation, and thankfully there are no front brakes on such bikes because that could have resulted in some nasty falls. The rear brake, however, was used quite a bit to slow down my aggressive straight runs. But just before entering the straights, the clutchless upshifts resulted in the rear shift tailing aggressively. That said, not even for a moment I felt I was losing control.

Verdict

TVS Ronin Front View

It is clear from this custom Ronin that TVS will continue to innovate with its motorcycles. The Ronin flat-tracker showed us the brand’s ability to enter a new sport and get more people into such races. The bike wasn’t just a temporary show. Much effort and time were put into making it dirt ready, which indeed took care of the dirt quite well. But more importantly, the concept of the Drift R Cup looks fun, and if expanded to various cities, TVS could see a profound change in brand perception. It will allow many Indian consumers to experience this new and addictive motorsport; maybe some would like to take it professionally. Well, I would have tried if the custom Ronin and a flat-track were easily accessible in my city.

1000 km and it's a pretty good ride so far. It's comfortable for long rides as well as city commuting. About mileage, I haven't tested it properly but I guess I have gotten 35 plus. It has good suspension. The only con I can think of is the tank might get a little heated after some time, especially in the city/slow traffic. I had my first service and it costs about 1.45k. The showroom here at Thrissur is good with a warm reception from staff

Went to buy ntorq but brought ronin instead and i do not regret at all!

      Rajat Verma

I wanted to buy a tvs ntorq or similar for my daily commuting (about 15 kilometers daily) and my younger brother suggested taking a test ride of other tvs bikes which looked fancy. With no intention of buying, I took the test ride of rtr 160 and found the seat and riding posture a bit cramped for my liking. Also, the throttle felt kinda jumpy to me. Now when I laid my eyes on Ronin it looked kinda different and way too much loud and wild for my liking. Still, I thought of taking the test ride. The moment I sat on Ronin it was a different experience. The seat was so comfortable and the riding posture was upright. The instrumentation console was also striking. I went back home so that i sleep over the idea of buying tvs ntorq but I could not resist owning a Ronin.
The next day I paid in full and brought the bike home. It was sure a looker, and I am a shy kinda person but this bike turns heads and I have been getting so much attention on rode. The design is polarising but I like it and so far I have been asked many times about this bike on the road. The torque on the entire rev range felt more than capable, and it also sounds very exciting. I use this for my daily commute with a mix of highway and city traffic and i have been getting a mileage of 46-44 after the first service. This bike is also straightforward to drive and you can literally run this at 20km/hr on 4th gear (not recommended but you can if you try) headlights are good, rest all instrumentation and pickup is also good.
Overall I am very very happy and would definitely recommend this bike to someone upgrading from a 100-110cc or a scooter.

      Pre-sale quality check zero

      Palash

They are sending products without prior quality checks. And after that, you need to knock the door of the service center several times.
Service: 1 out of 5 ( most important thing. Nobody will listen to you. I had to beg every possible door to solve my engine noise. Finally, they were replaced after a continuous struggle of 4 months. I lost all the happiness of a new bike already. But after everything I can say Ronin is having a huge noise issue, chain + engine + tappet.)
Features: 2 out of 5 - reason: Chinese company products also provide a lot of features but it's not sustainable.
Tyre grip: 3/5 (grip is good but the gap between tire cuts is soft, hence puncture chances are high, already experienced.)
Overall: 2/5 (overall bike is lightweight, power of weight ratio is good, pick up is good. But it's lightweight the ride long ride quality will not be up to the mark)
Road presence: 4/5 (road presence is good, the exhaust sound is good but not as good as Honda Hness)
Heating: 2.5/5 engine heating is there you will feel in long rides as well as bumper-to-bumper traffic. But manageable.
Compare to other products in the market: it cost around 2.21l on the road, and with a few accessories like ladies' footrest, tour kit, and back support it will go beyond 2.3lpa. But there is no comparison with Honda Hness. Hness is far far ahead of this in terms of the quality, and exhaust sound.
And Re Hunter brand value can't be compared with Tvs.
Hence the sale also down of this ronin. Not a successful vehicle.

I was looking to buy my first bike and I am glad I went with the TVS Ronin. I was about to buy the MT-1 but when TVS Ronin launched, I knew it was my bike. The look was very mesmerizing for me. My friends were telling me to buy RE Hunter but when they drive it they realized that I had made the right choice. Everything is perfect in this bike. The Performance, sound, looks everything. Parts availability is the issue for me. I want a new indicator but the service center is unable to arrange for me. Except that it's amazing.

The bike is suitable for all types of rides including daily commutes to off-road adventure rides. One thing I like about this bike is that it's suitable for family also. I am giving 4 stars rather than 5 because the maps on TVS connect apps and other features are not up to mark odometer is malfunctioning sometimes rest assured bike is good overall.

      1) Buying experience was okay.
      2) Talking about riding one of the most comfortable bike I rode, Doesn't feel any pain even after riding 100+km in one go. Have ride of 400+km for 5 times feels like riding a horse.
      3) Looks are okay for me but for many people its eye-catching.
      4) I can't say much about servicing but cost me about 1k rs for the first free servicing will write more after paid service
      5) Pro- excellent for a daily commute and for road trips on occasions
Cons-2-3 times engine light indicator was shown and the bike automatically turned off after again switching off and on key it started.
